Iconic Airstream Camper Trailer is a Luxury Getaway on Wheel
The name is classic and the aluminum silhouette unmistakable: The Airstream. This quintessential American trailer brand is synonymous with getting away on a relaxed adventure, wherever it might take you and now you can do it in high style. The company’s new 27-ft Globetrotter camper trailer is their latest model that will spirit you across the countryside with comfort and ease.
The Globetrotter is the result of a collaborative effort with UK design studio Astheimer Limited. It has the smooth capsule-like aluminum exterior we have come to expect from Airstream and a super luxurious interior. It quite literally allows you to take the comforts of home with you when you go. Larger and more luxurious than most small camper-trailers, the Globetrotter combines the historic elements of the brand with the latest in technology and interior design. If you’re more drawn to glamping rather than traditional camping, this is the trailer for you.
Today’s sleek Airstream models are a far cry from the first trailers that founder Wally Byam built from Masonite in his backyard in Los Angeles during the late 1920s. In the mid-1930s Byam launched the “Airstream Clipper”, whose design reduced wind resistance and increased fuel efficiency. Thus the now-iconic aluminum shape was born. Named after the first trans-Atlantic seaplane, it had its own supply of water and electric lights and was built to house four people.
The inspiration for the Globe Trotter trailer is traced back to 1948 when Byam and his buddy Cornelius Vanderbilt painted “Globe Trotters” on the side of their Airstream before they took off for Europe. From there, the original Globetrotter Travel Trailer line came about in the 1950s. The latest model of Globetrotter features a high-end interior that includes a bedroom, galley, lounge and dining area — all of which have undergone significant stylish and technological evolution.
Step inside and you’ll find a dreamy interior that is done in a sophisticated neutral palette with incredible design details, a little reminiscent of the mid-century era. No interior detail was overlooked. Upholstery is sleek and smooth, covered in HITCH woven seating for durability and strength as well as comfort. Storage built-ins have rounded edges that echo the rounded profile of the exterior. The kitchen sports Corian countertops and a stainless steel sink with European Franke brand faucet. Whether you’re on the road or just entertaining friends in a park near home, the 6.7 cubic-foot fridge and a pantry will hold all the food and supplies you need. A microwave is secreted away in its own cabinet that pulls out when you need it and the stove includes lighting, a vent and a small oven. All of these elements are key because keeping clutter at bay is critical for a clean and open look, something that the well-thought-out and hand-crafted cabinetry does.
The trailer comes with a choice of six different floor plans that range from 23 to 27 feet, and in the bedroom, you can choose between having a queen-size bed or two twins. Overall, the GlobeTrotter can sleep six when making use of the pull-outs in the sofa and seating areas in the main living space. The beds are equipped with adaptive foam mattresses and the space has a built-in central nightstand and reading lights, as well as a Samsung LED HD TV. At night, pull the drapes around the bedroom area and you have total privacy inside.
In addition to the fully outfitted kitchen, the living space also includes a Samsung LED HD TV for those rainy days and times when you just need to do a little binge-watching. There’s even more in store on the tech side: a Fusion Touchscreen surround sound stereo has Wifi, Apple Airplay, and Bluetooth® connectivity, over-the-air software updates, and SiriusXM. A built-in subwoofer and speakers are camouflaged in the design of the upper locker. The television with Blu-Ray players runs on 110V battery power, letting you enjoy a nighttime move even if you’re camping off the grid. The battery power also lets you charge any device easily.
The GlobeTrotter is also outfitted with a ducted climate control system to keep you comfortable no matter where you decide to camp.
Interiors come with customizable colors and finishes, allowing you to create the look you desire. This model’s bedroom shows the layout of the queen bed option, which has two side tables flanking the bed. The bedroom space can also have a small sink area for tooth brushing and shaving so that you don’t have to use the sink in the kitchen. The little nook includes spae to stash your toiletries and hang a couple of towels.
While the design and perks are enough to lure most people to Airstream, there are other important features that underlie its popularity, including how easy it is to tow and drive. The company says their trailers are some of the safest and most fun to travel with. In addition, the company follows environmentally conscious construction principles, from using insulation made from recycled glass to recycled water in their testing bays. Last and certainly not least, everything is hand-crafted in the United States and assembled at the Airstream headquarters in Jackson Center, Ohio.
