6 Creative Ways To Use Bamboo In Architecture And Interior Design
Lately, the architecture and interior design industries have been leaning more and more towards sustainable and eco-friendly materials, with bamboo being a prime candidate. Even though technically bamboo is a form of grass, it’s a very strong, durable and highly flexible material. Initially, it was a popular flooring material and later started being used as a building material as well. Today there are a lot of cool ways to use bamboo both in architecture and in interior design and decor. Its beautiful aesthetic is a great plus, often being a selling point which convinces many to adopt the eco-friendly route.
This is a holiday home designed by Zozaya Arquitectos and located in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. It has a modern look and a tropical character created by the palette of materials used by the architects. These include natural stone and bamboo, two very different materials which complement each other surprisingly well. The house featured a large stone wall which hides the lower level spaces from the street and offers them privacy but allows the upper level to showcase its beautiful bamboo facade.
For this amazing house in Singapore, Eco-id Architects came up with the idea of creating a bamboo screen which contrasts with the raw concrete structure and gives it the opportunity to stand out in an interesting and eco-friendly manner. The screen has two layers of sustainably-harvested hollow bamboo with a natural and authentic finish. The screen is a sort of giant wind chime. The bamboo canes are suspended and are gently moved by the breeze, giving the house musicality.
The Silver Linings Boutique Country Hotel from Yixing, in China was recently renovated by studio One TakeArchitects. Its new front facade features a series of angled balconies framed with bamboo panels. The bamboo is locally-sourced and sustainably-grown and its role is to add color and texture to the plain concrete facade and to give it a more interesting and sculptural appearance.
Bamboo is the main material featured throughout this restaurant and is even a part of the venue’s name. The Bamboo Eatery is located in China and was a project by studio Minggu Design. Its facade is framed by a bamboo screen from top to bottom. Inside, the designers used bamboo to guide visitors through the restaurant.
Villa Mediterraneo is an amazing contemporary building located in Ibiza. It was designed and built by architecture studio Metroarea. It looks sculptural and organic, featuring several bamboo-covered sections in its facades. In daylight these sections blend into the facade quite seamlessly, giving the building a distinctive textured look. The building changes completely at night when the illuminated interior glows and the bamboo sections become partially see-through.
Bamboo was also used to give this residence a unique facade. This was a project completed by architect Vilela Florez in Brazil. Numerous bamboo canes are integrated into the exterior facade at different angles inside specially-designed sections of different shapes and proportions. The herringbone-inspired pattern gives the building lots of character and contrasts beautifully with the black frame. Stone walls frame the house and give it privacy from the neighboring sites while also grounding the design in an organic manner.
