DIY Concrete Hexagon Coasters
I don’t know about you but to me there’s something so very calming about white concrete. Perhaps it’s the smooth surface texture combined with a flat matt finish that make it feel luxurious but at the same time not extravagant.
It’s robust quality is exactly the opposite in fact, feeling more as if the material has been recycled from a run down building site. It’s the perfect substance for a modern, minimalist home. And even minimalist homes need coasters. Combine this perfectly angular hexagon stacking coasters with a cup of camomile tea and steal a little moment of relaxation just for yourself.
If you’ve never worked with concrete before don’t worry. The idea of mixing concrete can sound overwhelming but in fact it’s actually very easy. You do not have to be perfectly accurate with measurements and by adding a little water at a time to the concrete until the mixture is soft but stands up on its own when you run your mixer through it, it becomes a very simple process.
Materials you’ll need to build the concrete coasters:
- White Concrete
- Cardboard
- Duct Tape
- Masking Tape
- Hexagon template
- Mixer stick
Instructions to craft the concrete coasters step by step:
Step 1: Prepare the cardboard
Cut out a cardboard hexagon using the template. Try to find cardboard that has a glossy, printed side. This will help to stop the concrete sticking to the cardboard as it dries. Cut a long thin strip from the same piece of cardboard and measure the length of one side of the hexagon from the end. Make a fold here and snip a small triangle at one edge.
Step 2: Fold & snip
Continue to measure, fold and snip a triangle along the strip of cardboard until you six sections to go all the way around the hexagon. Snip off the end corners and fold each of these newly made tabs up towards the rest of the cardboard.
Step 3: Strip
Fold the strip around the hexagon securing the tabs underneath with masking tape.
Step 4: Secure Place
Once you’re happy this is secured in place cover all the gaps and joins with strong duct tape.
Step 5: Mixing conrete
Mix the concrete as directed. Stir well to make sure there are no lumps left in the mixture then slowly pour a little bit into each of your molds.
Try to estimate around the same amount of concrete in each hexagon mold. You can mark an equal depth from the bottom off in each mold if you would like to be particularly precise.
Step 6: Add the mixture
Push the concrete into all of the corners using you mixer.
Then tap the whole mold gently against the table top to bring the air bubbles to the surface and pop them.
Step 7: Let it dry
Leave overnight to harden.
8. Once the concrete is dry gently pull back the sides of the mold to release the concrete.
Then turn upside down and tease out. Take your time. The concrete won’t be fully dry yet so it is still fragile.
Step 9: Ready for sanding
Now that all the sides are exposed to the air leave overnight again to ensure the coaster is really solid.
Step 10: Sanding Process
Sand down all the sides to give them a clean, crisp edge.
And your coasters are ready!
