Multipurpose Container House With A Sleek Floating Roof
Inspired by their client’s need for a warehouse space, the architects and designers at Constanza DomÍnguez C. and Plannea Arquitectura managed to create something really using recycled shipping containers. The project was completed in 2019 in Chile and makes use of two containers which are positioned parallel to each other with a 6 meter gap in between. The result is a container home with a unique twist. They serve different purposes but ultimately the entire structure as a whole is defined by lots of versatility and flexibility. One of the containers houses two bedrooms and a bathroom while the other one is a big open space which can be used for a variety of different purposes, including as a workshop, office or a gathering space.
The way in which the two containers are connected is through a large metal roof which extends over both of them, creating a sheltered area at the center which serves as a transitional space. The roof is placed at an angle and covers both containers entirely, being supported by metal stilts attached to the tops of the containers and to the ground. The open area in between is once again multifunctional. The containers feature wood cladding which adds warmth to their design. The one which houses the bedrooms also has large windows which frame views of the surroundings and connect the interior areas to the outside world. The entire project as a whole has a very low environmental impact. In addition to making use of shipping containers, the designers also incorporated reclaimed pallet furniture into the spaces, thus keeping the cost low and emphasizing the eco-friendly nature of the project even more.
